One purpose of the article is to say that how we dress is a critical part of messaging our gender, and therefore how we want people to make room for us. My being male contradicts a core part of the ordinary message of a dress; I am sympathetic to people's mixed feelings.

The issue of how much to meet each others' expectations is a life long challenge.
